What is HVAC foil tape?
HVAC aluminium foil tape is a metallised tape used to seal seams, joints and punctures in ductwork, and to finish insulation wraps on pipework. Unlike standard cloth "duct tape" (which isn't actually rated for ducts), foil tape is designed to withstand the temperature swings and airflow inside a working HVAC system.
Why foil tape instead of cloth duct tape?
- Cloth duct tape adhesive dries out and fails within months on HVAC systems
- Foil tape reflects heat and matches the thermal properties of metal ductwork
- It meets the standard expected for insulation and ductwork sealing on most installations

How to apply HVAC foil tape
- Clean the surface. Dust, oil or condensation will stop the adhesive bonding properly.
- Dry-fit the length before peeling the backing, so you're not fighting the tape once it's tacky.
- Apply firm, even pressure along the full length. A seam roller gives the best bond.
- Overlap joints by at least 25mm for a fully sealed edge.
- Smooth out air bubbles straight away, as foil tape doesn't reposition well once set.

Can I use HVAC foil tape outdoors?
Supraseal HVAC tape is moisture resistant and suitable for external ductwork and pipe runs, though it should still be protected from prolonged standing water.
Does foil tape work on flexible ductwork as well as metal?
Yes. Foil tape of this type bonds to both rigid sheet metal ducting and flexible ducting, provided the surface is clean and dry before application.
How should I store it?
Store rolls flat in a dry place away from direct heat. Always check the adhesive tack before a job if a roll has been open a long time.
