EPDM Installation Guides

Fitting a ClassicBond® EPDM roof is well within reach of a competent DIYer or general builder — it's cold-applied, there's no flame, and the membrane comes as one piece so there are no field seams to get wrong. The detail work at edges, pipes and corners is where jobs are won or lost, so that's what these guides concentrate on.

Before you start: price your roof with the EPDM roof calculator and it will list every adhesive, trim and corner the job needs. If anything below doesn't match your roof, call Tom on 07949 862834 — it's quicker than guessing.

1. Prepare the deck

The membrane is only as flat as what's under it. Get this right and everything after it is easy.

  • Deck in OSB3 or exterior-grade ply, minimum 18mm, laid with a 2–3mm expansion gap between boards.
  • Fix at 150mm centres around edges and 300mm in the field. Punch every fixing head flush or just below — a proud screw head will telegraph through the membrane.
  • Sand down any step between boards. Sweep the deck completely clean; grit under the membrane shows forever.
  • The deck must be bone dry. EPDM adhesives won't grab damp timber.
  • Fit your drip trims and gutter edge trims now, before the membrane goes on.

2. Lay the membrane

  • Unfold the sheet over the deck and let it relax for 30 minutes — longer in cold weather. It will lose its fold creases.
  • Position it so you have at least 50mm overhang on every edge, then fold it back on itself halfway.
  • Roller the deck adhesive onto the exposed half of the deck and the underside of the membrane. Both surfaces. Let it flash off until it's tacky to a knuckle but doesn't string.
  • Walk the membrane back into the adhesive slowly from the centre fold outwards, brooming as you go to push air out sideways. Don't drop it on in one go.
  • Repeat for the second half.

Temperature matters. Most EPDM adhesives want 5°C and rising, on a dry day. Cold or damp and the bond will disappoint you.

3. Edges, upstands and trims

  • Walls and upstands take contact adhesive, not deck adhesive — different product, check what the calculator listed.
  • Dress the membrane into the angle rather than bridging it. A bridged corner is a future split.
  • Trim the overhang back once bonded, not before.
  • Finish wall abutments with a termination bar and sealant, or tuck into a chase where the detail allows.

4. Pipes, drains and outlets

These are the most common leak points on a flat roof, and the ones worth slowing down for.

  • Use a pre-formed pipe seal wherever the pipe diameter allows — far more reliable than a field-fabricated one.
  • Where a pre-formed seal won't fit, a field-fabricated seal plus pourable sealer in a pipe box pocket is the accepted method.
  • Roof drains and anti-back-up drains clamp the membrane — make sure the membrane is fully bonded and flat for at least 150mm around the drain before you clamp.

5. Corners

  • Internal and external corners take pre-formed corner pieces. Don't try to fold a corner out of sheet membrane.
  • Prime, position, and roller firmly from the centre out.

Installation videos

ClassicBond's manufacturer, Flex-R, has a library of short installation videos covering roof drains, pipe seals, pipe box pockets, pourable sealer and corner details for both ClassicBond and ClassicBond PRO.

Videos are a good introduction, but they don't replace hands-on training. If you're unsure about a detail on your roof, ask us before you start rather than after.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing the flash-off. Adhesive applied too wet traps solvent and the bond never fully develops.
  • Adhesive on both surfaces — or not. Deck adhesive goes on both; check the tin, they differ.
  • Stretching the membrane. EPDM should be laid relaxed. Stretched membrane pulls at the corners as it cools.
  • Fitting in the wrong weather. Below 5°C, in rain, or onto a damp deck — all three cost you the job.
  • Bridging an angle. Every internal corner must be dressed in, not spanned.
